Cocoa Amore: Leicester's Little Slice of Heaven?
Review By Patrick Scattergood
Started in 2013 Cocoa Amore is a relative newcomer to the city of Leicester as far as food establishments go. This is after all one of the most multicultural cities in the UK and therefore is famous for having so many different styles of restaurants, bars and cafes that you could honestly eat somewhere different each night and not even come close to repeating a meal.
However, Cocoa Amore is a place that stands out from the crowd.
One of the things that struck me the most about Cocoa Amore is the sheer amount of variety of chocolate in there but at the same time, it's not just a stereotypical chocolate shop. Far from it.
The venue is broken up in to two parts. One is the 'shop' part so to speak with their confectionery wares on display and what wares they are. I would use the cliched comparison of it being like walking in to Willy Wonka's shop but it's much better. They take combinations that you wouldn't think would go together in a million years and yet they work supremely well. Over the Christmas period they had some sublime mincemeat chocolates that were, by far, my favorites out of the ones I've tried on my couple of visits there. The passion fruit ones are a delight as well so make sure to pick a couple of those up while you're there.
The other part of the venue is the one that interested me the most. I love seeing food being prepared by people that are masters of their craft and that's no different here. You can actually see them making some of their chocolates there while you're browsing and that, for a food nerd such as myself, is something that really sets them above other such places.
While I was there, especially on the Christmas period, one thing that struck me was just how great the staff there are at helping the customers. They're massively knowledgeable about their product, the flavor combinations and even where the different types of chocolate have come from. They honestly couldn't have been more helpful, which in this day and age where customers are treated just as statistics and not people, made a very welcome change.
For the 'foodies' out there, one of the things that I think will impress you the most is the fact that they are more than happy to spend time talking to you about their products and where the ingredients come from. The chocolate used comes from all over the world, coming from Fair Trade places as well as ethical plantations that have been set up as co operatives.
I honestly can't recommend this place high enough. Great staff, the chocolate that they make is both fairly priced, ethically sourced and incredibly tasty and with a chance to see it being made as well. What more could a chocolate lover want?
Cocoa Amore is truly Leicester's little slice of chocolate heaven.
